ALICE & OLIVIA Spring 2013 Fashion video

butterfly

Take a look at some pictures and a few behind the scenes stills from the Alice & Olivia fashion film I directed out in New York back in December.  It was shot over a day in their showrooms in New York and features models Ksenia Vasylchenko, Georgiana Sarev and Tali Lennox modelling Bendet’s Spring collection. The designer Stacey Bendet also appears in a brief cameo role. The film combines live-action and cut-out animation, a giant cut out heart and dozens of black telephones!!;)

Music is “Overdose” by indie pop trio Little Daylight.

To view the video see link below. Hope you enjoy it!

Latest work – Fashion Film Prep

Over the last month I have been prepping for a fashion film I am directing in January.

These are a few stills from the storyboard. They are for storyboard reference only. Pictures are of found-photographs with cut-out and collage. The film involves lots of paper cut outs and geometry. It is a short fashion film involving stop-motion, cut-out animation and live-action. I cant say too much now except I am going to be working with cinematographer Todd Duym and a team from Nobasura will be on set with Rad Kid Kristy Jacobsen modeling. Guest stylist Deanna Palkowski is working closely with me  too. I cant wait.  You will be able to see it first on Let Them Eat Cake, London. I will keep you informed when its up. Currently finishing off the making of props – I cant wait to see the giant protractor in action..

Early sketchbook stills you may be interested to see.

Blow-up

I love BLOW-UP directed by  Michelangelo Antonioni

especially the clothes and uber stylized model poses in this sequence. See clip below…

Dee and Ricky

Demetris and Ricardo Jackson, both 23, are twin brothers behind the eponymous accessories lineDee and Ricky. They also two-thirds of the internationally famous recording rap and dance group Jackson Swinton. Dee & Ricky sell bow ties, brooches and belt buckles made of colorful lego bricks. The stylish Lego duo, are from Staten island, NY where their masterpieces are created.

While attending a party in the Hamptons in the summer of 2007 they were spotted by stylist Jason Preston wearing a Gucci Lego belt. Preston in turn introduced them to designer Marc Jacobs.  Dee and Ricky went on and  designed a full range of Lego accessories for the Marc by Marc Jacobs spring ’08. In 2010 they collaborated with G-shock producing a  limited edition chronograph – an extra-large analog/digital with the Dee & Ricky design.  Their signature belts and heart-shaped brooches are sold internationally and have been worn by celebrities such as Kanye West, Beyonce, Nigo Murakami and MIA. The duo have also been involved in advertising campaigns for clients such as Puma, Nike, Supreme, and A New York Thing.

I am a personal fan!

Have a look at this animated teaser for “The Dee & Ricky Super Happy Fun Time Show” they did with NY video artist Kenzo Digital and Andrew Jive. – I love the cigarette versus apple and the death by lego!

Their blog is also worth having a look at. I came across this brilliant video : FUN WITH MAGNETIC BALLS  - literally ♥ ♥ ♥

Madame Peripetie

I have been meaning to post about Madame Peripetie for a while. I read a great article in Lab magazine a while back and was curious to have a look at more of her work and share some images with you.

Madame Peripetie aka Sylwana Zybura is a Polish conceptual photographer based in Germany. She uses various fabrics, patterns and objects in her work whilst exploring the boundaries between surreal high-fashion, sculpture and the  human body.  Her influences are surrealism, dadaism, the new wave era of the 80s, British post punk scene and the avantgarde theater of Robert Wilson. Here are some of my favourites;

Dream Sequence

Freak Love Triangle

Stills from Birds  series for Tata Christiane

Absolutely love these shots from her bird series. Beautiful colours and the combination of the matt painted background in contrast to the colourful feathers and fabric textures is stunning. There is mention she is currently experimenting with stop-motion films. I cant wait to see the results.

Intrigued to see more? – go here.

Goldfrapp’s OWL

All these giant woodland animals reminds me of the beautiful pictures shot for the promotion of Goldfrapp’s fourth album Seventh Tree released by Mute records in 2008.  Love the feathered giant owl.

Mulberry Fall 2011

Have a look at this new short for Mulberry involving photography and 3D Elements. Love the cut-outs and the fox! There are stuffed foxes too! The still and the moving…

Nice concept.

Vincent Morisset / Emilie Simon

Canadian Arcade Fire director Vincent Morisset collaborated with French singer and composer Émilie Simon in creating interactive videos for four of the tracks on her latest album, The Big Machine.  Photographer John Londono and illustrator Caroline Robert were also involved in the project. The films were shot during a day in Brooklyn -love the styling and symplicity.. In the videos they use a Thaumatrope to create simple animations. Each of the short clips is interactive – to have a play go here

Lu Wei Kang ** BARBIE GAGA **

Chinese designer Lu Wei Kang has made miniature outfits for Barbie recreating Lady Gaga’s wardrobe. Here are some of my favourites below – especially love the glasses detail from ‘Lady Gaga Telephone 2′ and the Linda Farrow/Jeremy Scott Micky Mouse glasses. Reminds me of the Madonna film I made for Dazed in collaboration with Maki Loulou who made the miniature outfits. If you havent seen watch the video here

2-d Dresses – Maison Martin Margiela Spring 2011

I love this collection by Belgian fashion designer Martin Margiela especially this flat woven cocktail dress below trimmed with a feather boa.

Contemporary Survival – Heels on wheels

I just finally ordered myself a copy of Philip Garner’s brilliant survival catalogue. Stilettos on wheels – what more can you want?! If only I’d had them the other day. I got lost in East Hastings in Downtown in the rain. Trust me for anyone that doesn’t know Vancouver – you dont want to get lost in Hastings! Its a spooky place. If only I had had Garner’s glamour speed shoes I would have been out of there in seconds!;)

On a more positive note I came across this awesome green building near Chinatown after getting lost. I havent boosted the colour -its seriously that bright! If you havent guessed by now I am a colour fiend! the brighter the better. I wonder who lives there.

See my slightly worried expression below being watched by some dubious characters on the corner. Take the picture quick!

Ive been meaning to post this up for a while  and now is the time. I bought these at REFIND ON MAIN for a bargain a few weeks back. I fell in love with these nike rollers!! The guy who runs it is so lovely. Definitely worth a visit. Not quite as glamourous as Garner’s but love the retro yellow. Shot this from a roof in Downtown. Sea wall here I come! Watch me roll…..

Musical Bra 1981 - A portable musical stereo bra, designed by Geoffrey Weston for Philip Garner’s spoof ‘Better Living Catalogue’

LOVE it! I wonder what tune it plays.
